"My artistic practice is set on multi-disciplinary research and thus generates various forms: essay films, book works or performances, both in art and public spaces. Always based on observations from reality and on narrative practices, I juxtapose layers of fiction and reality in order to create “transitory spaces” - these transits procreate mental spaces and mythological narrations. My work deals with urban space, collective memory and politics of images, offering metaphors about contemporaneous phenomena." Bettina Hutschek

Bettina Hutschek is present in Bucharest for a residency in the frame of the project “Transient Spaces - The Tourist Syndrome”, an interdisciplinary project on the topics of contemporary mobility, tourism and migration, encompassing research, theory, practice, through workshops, seminars, conferences and art exhibitions in Italy, Lithuania, Romania and Germany in 2009 and 2010.

NEWYORK – BREST – VENEZIA

Im Zentrum der künstlerischen Arbeiten von Bettina Hutschek steht das Thema der Wahrnehmung von Raum und Territorium. Insbesondere geht es ihr dabei um fiktive Dimensionen sowie die Einschreibungen kollektiver und individueller Erinnerung in jene Raumkonstruktionen.

Den Ausgangspunkt der Arbeiten bilden erzählerische bzw. bildliche Fragmente der gelebten Wirklichkeit, die miteinander verwoben, mit fiktiven Elementen angereichert und zu einer Metanarration weiterentwickelt werden. All diesen fiktiven »Erklärungsmodellen« ist die Frage nach bildlicher Repräsentation, sowie deren symbolischer und politischer Wirkungsweise und Macht immanent.

Die Ausstellung »New York – Brest – Venezia« stellt Portraits dreier Städte vor, deren urbane Räume Orte mentaler Projektionen und Mythen sind, gleichermaßen aber auch als Platzhalter für eine generelle Analyse städtischer Lebens- und Handlungsräume dienen.

Stadt wird hierbei als eine Hyper-Struktur beschrieben, die zwischen dem Realen, dem Fiktiven und dem Imaginären angesiedelt ist. In diesem als ›Mega-Stadt‹ beschriebenen Raum ist Architektur sowohl Ausdruck und Verkörperung als auch Störung der eingeschriebenen Mythen, Erinnerungen und Kräfte der Natur. Das utopische Potential der durch die Arbeiten betrachteten Raumkonstruktionen stellt sich über Bettina Hutscheks spezifischen Blick und eine poetische Umsetzung her. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung werden die drei Städte über jeweils ein »Kapitel« reflektiert. Jedes dieser Kapitel besteht aus einem Film sowie Fotografien bzw. Wandcollagen, wobei die Filme jeweils unterschiedlich präsentiert werden.

Die Ausstellung ist eine Kooperation mit dem centre d‘art passerelle, Brest (Frankreich) und wurde dort vom 20. Februar bis 10. April 2010 gezeigt.

The show NEWYORK - BREST - VENEZIA presents unusual portraits of three cities that become surrogates for a methodological analysis of urban and public space.
The principle “city” is being described as hyper structure, situated between the real, fictitious and imaginary space. The city becomes a mega-city, where myth, memory, and the forces of nature are incarnated, perturbed and juxtaposed by the architecture. The utopian potential lies in the poetic observation.
The show presents the cities by means of video projections, wall collages and photographs.

L'exposition new york - brest - venezia présente des portraits insolites de trois villes qui servent d'espace de projection et de méthode d'analyse de l'espace urbain et vital.  Le principe de la ville y est décrit comme une hyper-structure, située entre l'espace réel, fictif et imaginaire. La ville devient une "méga-ville", où les mythes, les mémoires et les forces de la nature se trouvent incarnés, perturbés et juxtaposés par l'architecture. Le potentiel d'utopie réside dans le point de vue poétique de cette observation. Cette exposition montre ces villes qui se construisent sous la forme de projections, de collages muraux et de photographies.   Une série de trois performances accompagne l'exposition. Bettina Hutschek, à la manière d'une conférencière, raconte, respectivement, l'histoire de chacune de ces villes suivant une narration qui tend de plus en plus vers l'absurde : la forme de la conférence scientifique est infiltrée par la poésie, l'ironie et la fiction. Les images documentaires et d'archives se trouvent mêlées à cette narration poétique, créant ainsi un mythe contemporain.

LAST DAY OF MAGIC Project started as an art and theory workshop at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, during which the artists were confronted with the suggestion that "today you live, tomorrow you'll die, what will you do on your last day (of magic)?" In-group, the artists designed rituals about departure and transformation. The rituals are designed with a personal significance and shamanic purpose. They examine the artist's interpersonal experiences with belief, sacrifice, loss, disappearance, and memory. These rituals were performed on March 28th in Marin County, North of San Francisco, and documented in video. Last Day of Magic was a melancholic journey to the metaphoric edge of the cliff of life where the artists took halt, built a secret community and resided.

LAST DAY OF MAGIC Video is an examination of illusion as well as disillusion that magic provides in culture: the search for the intangible; the revealing of deception, the removal of what's obscuring. Magic changes the perception of reality. Last day of Magic video is a curated film screening about secrets, lies, false beliefs, melancholy, disappearance, tragedy and transgression.

The exhibition examines processes and phenomena of encoding and the non-encoded, the focused and the blurred, symbolising and the unsymbolic, the Self and the Other, the discursive and the not-discursive or, to speak with Deleuze/Guattari, the smooth and the striated.

How does symbolic encoding work and what could "to represent reality" mean? Whose narrative strategies lead where and what does that tell us about them? How does one speak about someone/something, without (only) speaking about oneself? On the basis of four videos and an installation (that grows in between the monitors) the exhibition investigates those processes and phenomena and examines their modalities of symbolic encoding.

Thereby, in the works of Noel Douglas, Jakob Hentze, Bettina Hutschek, Céline Lachkar and Andreas Nachtmann documentation meets fiction, auto-referential monologising meets exposure of narrative strategies, analysis of media meets uncoded reality and video meets installation and performance.

Die Ausstellung untersucht Prozesse und Phänomene des Kodierens und des Nicht-Kodierten, des Scharfen und des Unscharfen, des Symbolisierens und des Unsymbolischen, des Eigenen und des Anderen, des Diskursiven und des Nicht-Diskursiven oder, um mit Deleuze/Guattari zu sprechen, des Glatten und des Gekerbten.

Wie funktioniert symbolische Codierung und was kann „die Realität“ repräsentieren bedeuten? Wessen narrative Strategien führen wohin und was sagt das über wen aus? Wie spricht man über jemanden/etwas, ohne dabei (nur) über sich selbst zu sprechen. Anhand von vier Videos und einer raumgreifenden Installation, die sich zwischen die Monitore schiebt (dazwischenwächst) und so auf gewisse Weise der inhaltlichen auf formaler Ebene entspricht, werden besagte Prozesse und Phänomene verhandelt und auf ihre Modalitäten symbolischer Kodierung hin untersucht.

In den Arbeiten von Noel Douglas, Jakob Hentze, Bettina Hutschek, Céline Lachkar und Andreas Nachtmann trifft dabei Dokumentation auf Fiktion, trifft auto-referentielles Monologisieren auf Entlarvung narrativer Strategien, trifft Medienauslotung auf uncodierte Realität, trifft Video auf Installation und Performance.

We welcome participants to Recherche, a salon celebrating intertextuality, aesthetic experience, and memory. Recherche brings together the visual arts, the humanities, and the sciences to focus on recherche as suggested in Marcel Proust's tome A la recherche du temps perdu. This graduate student-organized exhibition and conference comes in response to Dr. Julia Kristeva's visit to Stony Brook University to discuss the experience of literature in Proust. Recherche presents the community's own investigation into similar or relevant themes, bringing their works and ideas into dialogue with Professor Kristeva's and Proust's texts.

Bettina Hutschek will present her performance-conference "BREST" on April 02.
